Mexico: Hugo Sanchez
Hugo Sanchez, a former international striker and one of Mexico's finest footballers ever, joined the illustrious list of "FIFA for SOS Children's Villages" ambassadors in late 2005. Sanchez fully supports the 6 villages for 2006 charity campaign, which aims to collect donations to build six new children's villages including one in Mexico. |
In October 2005, Sanchez delighted children in the organisation's care in Huehuetoca by paying them a visit to receive his official "FIFA for SOS Children's Villages" ambassador certificate. Shortly before the quaint ceremony, Sanchez was shown around the children's village and exchanged a few words with the children and SOS mothers.
The former footballer, who among others played for Spanish club Real Madrid, was also kept busy signing autographs. Sanchez, who made 60 appearances for Mexico and scored 29 goals, said: "Mexico is a wonderful, big-hearted country, and the objective of SOS Children's Villages is humanitarian, beautiful and full of love. That is why I am here, because you the children deserve it. You can count on my support!" Sanchez also encouraged the children to make their dreams come true, as well as engage in loads of sports.
In addition, Sanchez pledged his support for 6 villages for 2006 - official charity campaign of the 2006 FIFA World CupTM, which will provide 800 orphaned and abandoned children with a home in a family environment at one of six new SOS Children's Villages. One of these new facilities will be constructed in Morelia, in Mexico's Michoacán province.
