Nepal Earthquake: A New 7.3 Earthquake in Nepal

Image

This morning, May 12th, a new earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck the Sindhupalchawk district of Nepal, northeast of Kathmandu. This is an area already affected by the April 25th earthquake. The new quake has been followed by strong aftershocks that continue to be felt as people have fled to open spaces. Certain surrounding areas are susceptible to landslides.

There are reports of at least 42 dead and over 1000 injured. Some buildings damaged by the initial quake on April 25th have collapsed, and new damage to housing and infrastructure is also evident.

All of our SOS Villages, staff and children are reported to be safe. The SOS Children’s Village in Bharatpur is reporting minor damage in one family home and some administrative buildings, but no one was hurt. Children and staff are staying outside as additional tremors and aftershocks continue.

Updates to come as additional news becomes available.

SOS Children’s Villages has been working in Nepal, providing relief camps in the Kathmandu Valley and offering child care centres throughout Nepal as well as helping to care for any unaccompanied children. We will be ramping up our response to the areas affected by the latest quakes very soon.
