When he was four years old, Robinson and his two brothers arrived at SOS Children’s Villages in Los Mina, changing their lives for the better.

Robinson says, “My first day at the village was amazing. My first reaction was, “WOW!” I was surprised by the space and seeing so many children.”

SOS Children’s Villages offered Robinson and his brothers hope for a better future and a safe and loving place where their worries of the past could fade away.

SOS families make sure that children arriving feel welcome. Robinson explains, “When they assign you a room, everything is beautiful.” It is more than a room; it is a home, a place to belong and be loved.

A family that cares

From the very beginning, strong bonds were forged with his SOS family and mother. Robinson arrived with two biological siblings but gained ‘hundreds of brothers [and sisters] and friends at the same time.’ They were all united by the common bond of love and support. Together, they laughed, played, and explored the world around them. There was never a dull moment, whether it was taking leisurely walks, going to school, making art, or engaging in spirited games of soccer or basketball.

Access to an education

Beyond the joyous moments of play, SOS Children’s Villages provided Robinson with ongoing support with his education. Thanks to dedicated professionals, he had the opportunity to pursue various technical courses that equipped him with the skills he needed to thrive in the world beyond the village walls.

“I took many technical courses, and everything I learned is what allows me to make a living outside of SOS Children’s Villages—to survive and live.”

Through youth economic empowerment and employment programs, Robinson received an internship in the hospitality industry. He excelled and was offered a paid position when the internship ended.

Gratitude

While growing up, “I had two sponsors who were a couple, and I would send them pictures of what I painted, how I was doing at school, things that I liked, friends I met when I first got here, everything.” The ongoing support and encouragement of SOS sponsors mean a lot, as it provides children with opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.

“To welcome a child and provide them with an education and a loving home was the miracle I needed [and SOS Children’s Villages was there] just when I needed it.”

And now, as Robinson lives an independent life outside of the SOS village, he carries with him the fervent hope that every young person, every child, will have the opportunity to receive the same love and support that he did. Every child deserves to live a life of dignity, joy, and boundless opportunity.

As Robinson experiences the world, he does so, knowing he is never alone.
