Helping Children in India - SOS Mother Sunanda

After the 1993 earthquake in Latur, India, which left 10,000 dead and over 50 villages destroyed, thousands were left homeless, including children.
SOS mother, Sunanda, was luckily minimally affected by the disaster. The children she saw on the street however, left traumatized and vulnerable in the aftermath, was impossible for her to bear.
That’s why she became an SOS mother.
An SOS mother is responsible for raising orphaned and abandoned children as her own. She cooks them healthy meals, gets them ready for school and tucks them into bed each night. She is a role model and a surrogate mother to children who have lost everything.
“A SOS mother is most important person in the life of children; she does a lot and plays the main role to make sure they become a successful person in society. I want to say thank God and SOS who gave me a chance to become a SOS mother,” says Sunanda.
Being an SOS mother, Sunanda has had the unique opportunity to have raised 18 children as her own since becoming an SOS mother in 1995. She is currently caring for 7 children, 3 boys and 4 girls, aged 7 to 18 year old.
Sunanda will retire next year from being an SOS mother and is looking forward to putting her feet up for some well-deserved rest. She will stay connected with the SOS Village in Latur and will always be eagerly waiting visits from her large SOS family.
