Israel-Palestine conflict: We must protect children and their rights
It’s been one month since the Israel-Palestine conflict erupted leading to ongoing escalations with horrifying consequences for hundreds of thousands of people and devastating loss of lives. A staggering number of them children. As the catastrophic conflict continues, more and more children are tragically losing their parents and loved ones, if not their own lives, and the numbers grow by the day.
Children and young people are among the most exposed to violence, deprivation, and inequalities stemming from conflict. In addition to their own trauma, they feel the struggles and fears of the adults caring for them and their loved ones. This is even more true for children without, or at risk of losing, parental care. The human, humanitarian and psychological consequences on all children and their families will be substantial and long-lasting.
SOS Children's Villages supports children, young people and families on both sides of this conflict, with programs in Israel and Palestine – and all neighbouring countries. As always, we stand firmly for the rights of children. We appeal to all parties to take immediate steps to protect children and respect their obligations under international human rights and International Humanitarian Law, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
SOS Children’s Villages is on the ground in Palestine and Israel providing humanitarian assistance where possible, including:
-
Direct humanitarian support to the most affected families and separated children to avoid further family separation
-
Emergency care services for unaccompanied or separated children, including identification, registration, and placement in safe and nurturing environments
-
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), particularly for children and caregivers, to help them cope with trauma and emotional distress
-
Temporary remedial classes for school-aged children affected by the war until schools are restored
-
Financial support to families facing difficulties, including female-headed households and youth
As a humanitarian organization and part of the SOS Children’s Villages Federation, SOS Children’s Villages Canada is committed to the fundamental humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence, ensuring the utmost care and respect for the wellbeing and dignity of affected populations.
