A seat at the table: An evening of meaningful connections
When the curtain separating the main hall from the reception opened, the violinist’s majestic presence and popular rhythmic sounds filled the room, lulling the guests to their seats.
The evening had many memorable moments, taking us on a journey through the impacts of SOS Children’s Villages’ work. It served as a powerful reminder of our mission, highlighting not only what we do but, more importantly, why we do it – for the profoundly positive and long-lasting effects on children’s lives.
“Such a wonderful event! I had an amazing time! Together, we were united in our mission to make a difference, and it was beautiful to see. Thank you @soscanada for a lovely evening! It was one I won’t forget.” Sommer Knight, student in clinical psychology, University of Ottawa
The highlight of the evening was the opportunity for guests to interact with Regina, a former sponsored child from SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, and later witness her heartfelt speech. Regina’s words were powerful and poetic as she painted a picture of her experiences and her life as an adult outside of SOS Children’s Villages.
Regina thanked SOS Children’s Villages donors for “giving her flowers when the sun refused to shine.” Because of their caring and financial support, she was provided with a family, a home, unconditional love, safety, and access to an education. She expressed gratitude for all the opportunities that helped shape her future into a happy and successful one.
“Regina’s story was especially touching, as she grew up at SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana, Tema program location. Voula McLaughlin’s story about her father was another incredible account of how a sponsor can make a generational change in a child’s life and family. It was great to get an even deeper understanding of what SOS Children’s Villages is doing on both a personal and international scale.” Audrey Addo, Business Analyst, BMO
The entertainment was colourful, the food was delicious and varied, and the special guests' well-thought-out presentations were memorable, but the lasting imprint is the one made onto our hearts. It was impossible not to be moved, and for some of us, to tears, in celebration of the success stories of children and youth in SOS Children’s Villages’ care worldwide.
