Single mother in Ethiopia builds a brighter future with her coffee and tea business
Zehara’s* journey has been one of immense courage and resilience in the face of daunting barriers. Living with a physical disability, she managed daily struggles while enduring the unimaginable loss of her child in a tragic accident. She became the sole caregiver responsible for raising two young children when her husband left the family.
Amid these hardships, Zehara found hope through SOS Children’s Villages. The Early Childhood Development and Community Centre provided essential support for her daughters and access to new opportunities. With the guidance and resources provided by SOS Children’s Villages, Zehara began to envision a brighter future.
Supported by the Unifor Social Justice Fund, Zehara attended business skills training that introduced her to budgeting, marketing, and management – knowledge she never had the chance to learn. Describing the experience as “life-changing,” Zehara fully embraced every lesson, determined to use these newfound tools to create security for her family.
After completing her training, Zehara received a start-up grant to launch a tea and coffee business. The grant enabled her to purchase the necessary materials to establish her venture and navigate rising costs.
Today, Zehara’s business is thriving, allowing her to meet her family’s basic needs and provide stability for her children. She has inspired other single mothers in her community, sharing her story and encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite life’s challenges.
Zehara’s journey highlights the importance of education, empowerment, and resilience. Thanks to SOS Children's Villages’ comprehensive programs and donor support, she is confidently building a brighter future for her children.
