SOS Children’s Villages Regional Humanitarian Response to the Ukraine Crisis
On February 24, 2022, Russian armed forces invaded Ukrainian borders in the north, followed by the Russian military crossing into the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine. This Russian invasion has led to mass displacements, destruction of infrastructure, and tragic loss of civilian life. Despite the efforts of humanitarian organizations like SOS Children’s Villages, the past year and a half has brought unimaginable hardship and suffering for many Ukrainian families. A generation of Ukrainian children are having their rights to education, healthcare, a loving family and protection denied, which will have a lasting impact on their future.
In March 2022, SOS Children’s Villages sprang into action to protect children and families and deliver vital humanitarian aid in Ukraine and neighbouring countries welcoming refugees.
Building on its long-standing partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine, SOS Children’s Villages Canada launched a Regional Humanitarian Response to provide life-saving and essential services to affected Ukrainians. This includes providing access to shelters, non-food items such as newborn care and hygiene kits, cash assistance, health services, food, and protection assistance.
The Regional Humanitarian Response was implemented in Ukraine, Hungary and Romania. 13 locations were chosen due to the high number of Ukrainian refugees or internally displaced families moving to or transiting through these areas.
The SOS Children’s Villages Regional Humanitarian Response significantly impacted the lives of over 58,000 Ukrainians (86% children and women) and provided the following:
