SOS Children's Villages in Kita
SOS Children's Village Kita is situated on the outskirts of the city of the same name. It is five km from the city centre. The village was built on a site of seven hectares of land and includes fifteen family houses, the village director's house, administration buildings and a house for the SOS aunts (SOS mother trainees or family helpers who support the SOS mothers), ancillary rooms and a sports ground. The SOS Children's Village can accommodate up to 150 children.
An SOS Kindergarten and an SOS Hermann Gmeiner School both are open to the children of the SOS Children's village as well as to the children of the neighbourhood. The SOS Kindergarten consists of six classrooms for up to 200 children. The SOS Hermann Gmeiner School (primary and secondary school) is currently under construction. It will consist of eighteen classrooms (twelve for the primary school and six for the secondary school) as well as an administration office, a handicraft workshop, a kitchen and a canteen. At this school, up to 810 children can be taught.
An SOS Social Centre was opened on the site of the children’s village with the aim of offering help to the people in the city of Kita and its neighbourhood. In addition to social, medical and financial aid for children, this centre offers counselling regarding child education and career guidance for parents. Conceived with the aim of strengthening the families against poverty, this program is run in cooperation with the local authorities.
