SOS Children's Villages in Ayacucho
SOS Children's Village Ayacucho is located in the city of the same name in southern Peru.
The city of Ayacucho is the capital of the Ayacucho Department and is an agricultural, manufacturing and educational centre. It is situated in a fertile valley on the eastern slopes of the Andean Cordillera Occidental at 2,746 metres above sea level and has a pleasant and invigorating climate.
Ayacucho is one of the departments of Peru which has suffered extreme violence during the past decades: this situation has led to massive migration from the countryside to the city, high rates of poverty and a large number of orphaned and abandoned children.
SOS Children's Village Ayacucho is located on the outskirts of the city on a site of 10,000 m² and consists of fourteen family houses, where up to 126 children can find a new home.
In addition to the family houses, there is the village director's house, a house for the so-called SOS aunts (SOS mother trainees or family helpers who support the SOS mothers during their daily work and fill in for them when they are ill or on leave), an administration and service area, a multipurpose building, a guard's house, and a guest house for SOS Children's Village co-workers who participate in training workshops or who come to SOS Children's Village Ayacucho on business.
The children and co-workers from the SOS Children's Village use the kindergartens, schools, health centres and shopping facilities in the vicinity. This ensures that they are well integrated within the community.
An SOS Social Centre is also part of the SOS Children's Village.
The Social Centre has been in operation since January 2006 and focuses on so-called Family Strengthening Programmes. It provides support and child minding to single mothers and their children who live in extreme poverty.
The objectives of the programme are to improve the nutritional condition of the children as well as the income situation of the mothers by training their basic skills, to assure integral health care and to prepare the children to attend kindergartens and schools. The main goal of the programme is to prevent children from being abandoned by their biological relatives due to their difficult social situation.
