SOS Children's Villages in Karachi
SOS Children's Village Karachi was opened in 1987 and comprises of 15 family homes and other essential facilities. It is situated on a seven-acre site in Malir, donated by the Government of Sindh.
Karachi is the largest city, main seaport and financial centre of Pakistan, and the capital of the province of Sindh. With an estimated population of about 25 million, Karachi is one of the world's largest cities in terms of population. It is Pakistan's centre for banking, industry and trade.
The children in SOS Children’s Village Karachi are involved in many extra-curricular activities and are provided with assistance in their studies. As in all the Villages, education is emphasized and seen as an important aspect in helping children realize their full potential.
The SOS school and college accommodate over 1,600 students. The academic success of the student has been excellent, and the school now offers subjects that lead to professional courses. This institution has made a big impact on the existing educational standards and is recognized as one of the best in the area.
The SOS youth home is located just a 15-minute drive from SOS Children’s Village Karachi. The youth benefit from the SOS home while attending school and training with different organizations. They also have an access to recruiting programs, like one organized by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) which SOS youth often take a keen interest in.
Another addition to the facilities available in Karachi is the SOS Technical Training Institute based in Korangi. All the workshops are operational, with the automobile workshop being especially popular. It has a capacity to train 1,200 students every year who can benefit from the vocational training on offer. Courses are structured for both boys and girls and will go a long way towards ensuring job eligibility for the young people who participate in the training programs.
The SOS Medical Centre for Women and Children is situated within the Village and offers free treatment to the community. A doctor is available on a daily basis, and the number of patients examined and treated has now reached almost 5,000 per year.
