SOS Children's Villages in Rawalpindi
The third Village to be built in Pakistan, SOS Children's Village Rawalpindi opened in 1989 with 19 family homes. The Village now provides loving homes for up to 250 children and young people.
The eight-acre site was donated by the Government of the Punjab and is set in a beautiful location in the countryside on the banks of the Soan River. In addition to the SOS youth home and SOS school, it also includes a technical training centre with excellent facilities that serves both SOS youth and those from the local community.
Being near the country's capital, a steady stream of dignitaries visits the Village and express their appreciation of the nurturing environment and happy children. The children are also able to take advantage of the many interesting places nearby and enjoy the trips to neighbouring areas. As in all the Villages, alongside many extra-curricular activities, great emphasis is given to the children's education and they are given regular tutoring after school to support their success.
The SOS school comprises of primary, junior, and high school levels. It provides the foundation for achieving academic success in subjects such as science and computer studies, and is open to children from the community.
The SOS Technical Training Institute was established in 2000 and offers training in trades such as refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical engineering, auto mechanical and auto electrical. This institute proved to be very popular so a second intake stream was added to respond to the growing demand for training. Hundreds of unemployed young people are now being supported, helping them to earn a livelihood and become independent.
With 25 computers now onsite, IT classes have been incorporated into the regular curriculum as well as being offered as a separate course.
