Vincent Kompany, soccer hero and children’s champion
With all eyes on the World Cup, its star athletes can oftentimes seem otherworldly.
Vincent Kompany is one such player: captain of the Manchester City club, captain, named by The Guardian in 2012 as one the top 25 football players in the world and, of course, captain of the Belgian national team at the 2014 World Cup.
However, Kompany is also SOS Children’s Villages first ever International Ambassador. Kompany’s endorsement of SOS and its mission to provide a loving home for every child stems from his own child upbringing.
Born to a mother from Belgium and a father who was a political refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Vincent is keenly aware that each child has a unique potential to be unlocked if they are nurtured and cared for.
Kompany, who has two children of his own, says that: "No child should grow up alone without love and a stable home. I am proud that in some small way I can help SOS Children's Villages. If my support can help improve the opportunities for children in South America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, I pledge to do all I can every day.”
Kompany’s time in Brazil allows ideal opportunity to endorse SOS Children’s Villages. For example, until July 4, fans around the world will have the chance to bid on Kompany’s jersey worn in the recent match against USA, of which proceeds will directly support SOS.
We are deeply flattered that Vincent Kompany is also a part of our team," said SOS Children's Villages CEO Richard Pichler. "We deeply appreciate his generosity in visiting children, supporting fundraising campaigns and raising awareness of how our programmes make a real difference."
