Liza’s Story

“As I picked Liza* up to my lap, I began to cry because of her condition. I did not think I was capable of giving assistance to this little girl to get her better,” says Zélia, Liza’s SOS Mother.

Liza was about two years old when both of her parents died. Living in poor conditions, under the care of her elderly grandfather, Liza quickly became at risk of severe malnourishment and authorities intervened.

When Liza came to live with her SOS Mother Zélia, her appearance did not correspond with her age. She was unable to stand or walk and had a bad skin disease, often a symptom of malnourishment, neglect, and distress.

Today, Liza has grown into a healthy and happy young lady; she attends school and has a lively and outgoing personality.

“I like singing songs that I learn at school,” says Liza. “And one day when I am big, I want to be a teacher.”

Liza’s story is one of victory; she lives with her nine brothers and sisters and a mom who adores her.  She has overcome great obstacles, and through a loving family, has finally found a place to call home.
