Heightened Concern for Children and Families in Aleppo

Alia Al-Dalli, SOS Children’s Villages' International Director of the Middle East and North Africa Region, issued the following statement in response to escalating violence in Syria’s Aleppo:

“As the horror in Aleppo persists, SOS Children's Villages continues to do all that it can to support children and families. No matter how much we are doing, whether providing milk for babies, hot meals for families or medical care for mothers and children, we are simply unable to support the vast number of internally displaced people."

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the many unaccompanied children in this catastrophe situation trying to survive in freezing temperatures and under relentless violence. We in SOS Children's Villages International call on all parties involved in this enduring conflict to respect the rights and lives of civilians in Aleppo and all of the other besieged areas in Syria.”

Through it all, SOS remains to help Syrian children and families

SOS Children’s Villages has provided safe and loving homes to orphaned and abandoned children in Syria since 1981. The heightening conflict in Syria led to the launch of an emergency response program that has reached over 300,000 children and families with food, aid, shelter and psychological support.

In Aleppo, we are distributing 500 food kits daily.   A water pump near the SOS Children’s Villages warehouse is supplying water to those living in the area.

In the surrounding areas of Aleppo, where the majority of children and families have fled to seek shelter, SOS Children’s Villages:

  • Provides 15,000 hot meals a day
  • Distributed 2,800 milk kits to displaced families
  • Provides ongoing education to 540 children in a school renovated by SOS Children’s Villages
  • Employs two doctors that provide health care for mothers and children
