Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami Update
On September 28, a tsunami, triggered by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake, hit the coastal Indonesian city of Palu, killing hundreds and devastating the area. SOS Children’s Villages International reports that all children in SOS Indonesia’s care and co-workers are safe and unaffected by the tsunami.
Currently, it has been recorded that over 1,200 people have died and there are around 16,000 internally displaced persons. Of this, around one third are children.
SOS Children’s Villages is committed to supporting children and communities in need where we are present, during and after a disaster. Gregor Hadi Nitihardjo, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Indonesia, notes that SOS Children’s Villages is putting together an emergency response team to assess the situation for children, focussing on the protection of the most vulnerable children who have lost parental care.
The main objectives of the SOS emergency response team will be to look at the need for psychosocial support for children, reunification for unaccompanied minors and Child Friendly Spaces so those affected can receive the care and protection they need.
