SOS Canada staff visit SOS Children's Villages Ghana
In Ghana, SOS Children’s Villages has been active since 1974 and runs a variety of programs for children and families in four locations across the country: Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi, and Tamale.
In addition to recovering from the impacts of COVID-19, the war in Ukraine has affected food security and pushed up inflation in Ghana. The increasing cost of food and other materials has made life more difficult for already struggling young people and families. SOS Children’s Villages' work is vital to help people lift themselves out of poverty and use their talents to build successful businesses, helping families and communities succeed in the long term.
SOS Children’s Villages Canada Program Officer Kianna visited our programs in Ghana this past summer and shared with us her experience. From visiting with graduating students to meeting SOS mothers, she provided us with a snapshot of the work, needs, and impact of SOS Children’s Villages’ work in Ghana.
SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College
Established in 1990, the SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College (HGIC) in Tema, Ghana, offers high-quality education and promotes academic excellence among young people across Africa. It also provides students from SOS Children’s Villages in Africa with the chance to attend its International Baccalaureate program, preparing them for independence and the skills needed for success in higher education.
Kianna visited the school during the students’ graduation day. It was a joyous celebration of all the hard work and dedication these young people have put into their studies and extra-curricular activities. These students represent some of the best and brightest from across Africa who are on the path to a brighter future.
SOS Children’s Villages Canada is proud to have partnered with the Steele Family Foundation to establish the World Impact Scholarship & Education (WISE) program to support students at the HGIC. Building on the success of the HGIC, the scholarship will help students from SOS Children’s Villages achieve their dreams of higher education and reduce the barriers associated with pursuing an education at prominent universities in Africa.
In 2023, the WISE scholarship will enable students to pursue post-secondary education through financial support, career counselling, and mentorship, as well as internship and volunteer opportunities.
