SOS Children’s Villages youth program in Los Mina, Dominican Republic

Since 1985, SOS Children’s Villages has been working in Los Mina to support children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it, helping to create a brighter future for the community's most vulnerable youth.

Los Mina, an impoverished neighbourhood on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, is experiencing many challenges despite the Dominican Republic's economic growth. Two-thirds of families live below the poverty threshold, and issues such as child abandonment, unemployment, crime, substance abuse, and gender-based violence are prevalent. Access to essential services like clean drinking water and reliable electricity remains limited.

SOS Children’s Villages’ programs provide crucial support to some of the most at-risk youth in Los Mina. Many come from single female-headed households with limited family support, positive role models, and financial resources. These young people often encounter significant barriers to completing their education and securing formal employment, limiting their opportunities for a stable future. Without assistance, they are at a higher risk of engaging in criminal activities, gang violence, substance abuse, dangerous work such as non-regulated jobs, and experiencing challenges such as early parenthood and abusive relationships.

Meet José, a former youth program participant. Thanks to the education and guidance he received, he is now raising a family and attributes his successes to SOS Children’s Villages.

Our approach to supporting disadvantaged youth

  1. Individual development plans: Each participant works with an SOS Youth Worker to develop a personalized plan that outlines academic goals, career aspirations, and essential soft skills necessary for success in school and the workplace.

  1. Workshops and training: Youth participate in workshops covering life skills such as financial literacy, nutrition, public transportation, sexual health, and reproductive rights. YouthCan!, a program launched by SOS Children’s Villages in 2017, is a global network of corporate volunteers and local business partnerships that provides young people with training in employability and entrepreneurship, mentorship, internship opportunities, and support during their first work experiences.

  1. Support for independent living: When youth attend university or vocational training, SOS Children’s Villages provides financial assistance for school fees and living expenses, including rent, food, transportation, and healthcare.

  1. Ongoing support: After transitioning to independent living, SOS Youth Workers continue offering coaching and guidance to ensure the youth feel supported and can overcome any challenge. Mental health services are also available to those in need.

In 2024, 75 youth in Los Mina (45 girls and 30 boys) are benefitting from these programs, helping them gain the skills necessary for a sustainable future. Of the 61 youth participating in the YouthCan! program, 16 are in the SOS Children’s Villages alternative care program, and 45 are from the broader community.

We sincerely thank the Austrian Society of Montreal and all attendees of the Viennese Ball for their generous support of SOS Children’s Villages youth programs in the Dominican Republic.
