SOS Children's Villages in Hai Phong
The cornerstone of SOS Children's Village Hai Phong was laid in November 1994. The first children moved into the new family homes in August 1996. Hai Phong is an economically very important port a little over 100 km east of Hanoi. SOS Children's Village Hai Phong is situated in the town centre, near a market and a hospital. It consists of 14 family houses, staff accommodation and the necessary administration area.
There is an SOS Kindergarten, where up to 190 children can be taught in six group rooms. In 2000, an SOS Hermann Gmeiner School was opened. It offers primary and secondary education and comprises 21 classrooms, laboratories, a library and a canteen. Both kindergarten and school are attended by children from the SOS Children's Village and from the local community.
Older youths from the SOS Children's Village usually move into the SOS Youth Facility when they start a vocational training course or go on to higher education. With the support of qualified youth workers, they develop realistic perspectives for their future, learn to shoulder responsibility and increasingly make their own decisions. They are encouraged to develop team spirit and build up contacts with relatives and friends, as well as with the relevant authorities and potential employers.
